QUARTET BRACED FOR TROPHY SEMI-FINALS.

By Admin

The FAW Trophy semi-finals will be played in mid-Wales on Saturday as two clubs from the south meet two from the north-east of the country.

There were 151 entries at the start of the season, so the final quartet have already made a significant achievement in the FAW’S intermediate competition.

The first semi-final will be played at Victoria Avenue, Llanidloes at 2pm, between the 2011/12 Champions Sully Sports and Rhostyllen of the North East Wales Football League, with both clubs representing level 5 of the FAW Pyramid.

The second semi-final will be played at Latham Park, Newtown at 5:30pm, between level 4 side Abergavenny Town of the Welsh Football League division 3 and level 3 outfit, FC Queens Park of the Welsh National League Premier.

Sully Sports v Rhostyllen
Victoria Avenue, Llanidloes (14:00)

Sully Sports are currently fourth in the South Wales Alliance League, with games in hand over the three clubs above them. They have won nine and drawn three of their sixteen games to date. They are missing striker Alex Long on the weekend through injury, which is a blow to the side from the Vale of Glamorgan, as he scored the winner when they lifted the Trophy four years ago.

Rhostyllen – who only reformed this season – have enjoyed a fantastic campaign, having also reached Round 2 of the JD Welsh Cup, winning three ties in the process. Their Cup runs and the inclement weather means that they have only played ten League games, winning eight and drawing one.

Both clubs harbour promotion ambitions, but will also be desperate to play in a National Cup Final next month. The match promises to be an excellent encounter and it’s a brave person who can predict the outcome of this tie.

Abergavenny Town v FC Queens Park
Latham Park, Newtown (17:30)

The men from Gwent reached the semi-final last season, but will be hoping to go one step further this year. Town have climbed their way up the Leagues in recent years and could be in line for another promotion, as they are currently in second spot in the Welsh Football League division 3. Town have played 22 league games, winning 16 and drawing three.

FC Queens Park are the highest ranked side left in the competition and are also hoping for promotion at the end of the League season. They too are second in their League, having won 13 games and drawn two from the 17 league games to date.
