NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORTS – SATURDAY, JANUARY 7

FC Queen’s Park 5 Penyffordd Lions 1
Report: Dave Evans – with thanks
Returning heroes Mikey Latham and Richie Jones both made the scoresheet as the Park exacted revenge over a Penyffordd side which had beaten them 6-5 in the league cup earlier this season.

Within two minutes the hosts were one-up as a delightful cross by Adam Roberts was headed home by Callum Roberts – full-back to full-back.
The game then settled into a good rhythm with both teams trying to play on a wet pitch. Queen’s Park were gaining the upper hand and it was Dylan Jones who pounced on a short goal-kick to finish with a delightful effort from the edge of the box.

Penyffordd still looked dangerous and their man mountain up front Ben Hughes certainly kept both Rhys Hughes and Charlie Rowley on their toes, but both stood firm and as well as their battle played some great football from the back.

It was a tough day in centre midfield but both Tony Jones and Chad Humphreys constantly sniffed out the danger and kept the side ticking.

Early in the second half the Park were awarded a penalty and up stepped Latham to dispatch a bullet kick to score on his return, albeit at the second attempt.

The game was not without its scares for the home side and Penyffordd replied with a Hughes penalty after a soft handball. Josh Edwards will be frustrated as he had put in a confident performance.

The highlight of the game was yet to come as Richie Jones came to the fore. What an outstanding all-action performance for the returning Park legend as he ran the line tirelessly, after not playing for three seasons.

This was a non-stop display that certainly warranted man of the match. Jones capped off his performance with a great goal after some unselfish work by Jack Hanley.

If the icing on the cake was needed it was once again delivered by the other comeback star Latham.

A great ball out wide by Tony Jones found Latham in space and with his classic drop shoulder and feint, he dummied his way twice into a shooting position to score.

Penyffordd can hold their head up high as they were certainly in this game for large spells.

Wednesday night sees Queen’s Park back in action for a Mike Beech Memorial Trophy tie under the floodlights against Coedpoeth (7 pm kick off at Queensway).

Overton Recreational 4 CPD Sychdyn 2
Four goals in 19 second half minutes won the game for an Overton side which was 2-0 behind at the interval.

But between the 61st and 80th minutes the situation changed, Barry Sheehan, Ryan Walters (OG), Christopher Bush and Alex Williams combining to deliver Overton the win.

Ruabon Rovers 9 Aston Park Rangers 2
Conner Kendrick and Leighton Kendrick both bagged hat-tricks in a tremendous show from Ruabon.
