Queen’s Park lift Mike Beech Trophy and boost title hopes with win at Brymbo

The Park celebrated what they hope will be the first leg of a treble as they lifted the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy on Sunday.

Dean Hyland handed a hard-working Greenfield a second-minute lead but Richie Jones benefited from a Mike Latham assist to make it 1-1 with 10 on the clock.

Latham again provided the set-up when Jack Hanley put the Park 2-1 up on the half-hour.

Midway through the second half, Callum Roberts added a third for Dave Evans’ side and that was the end of the goals, Hyland being shown a red card for Greenfield in the closing stages.

The Mike Beech Memorial Trophy is played for every season in honour of the much-missed and much-loved former league secretary, who passed away in 2017 after a lifetime devoted to football.

Three Brymbo players were sent off in a fiercely-contested Tuesday night battle which saw leaders Queen’s Park have two-goal hero Mike Latham to thank for their narrow victory.

The bottom-placed Steelmen, without a win all season, were determined to end their fixtures with a bang and took a surprise 32nd minute lead with a Nathan Kershaw spot-kick.
It remained 1-0 until the 55th minute when Latham levelled with a penalty.

On 72 minutes it was that man Latham again, netting his 22nd goal in 14 matches since rejoining the Park five months ago, who made it 2-1.

Brymbo then lost control with Tommy Booth red-carded on 77 before Jack Good (79) and Robert Arnold (85) suffered a similar fate.

So, three priceless points for the Park, leaving the top two looking like this (each team plays 18 matches)

Connah’s Quay Town: P 14 PTS 33 (GD + 29)

Ryan Williams (2), Leighton Kendrick and Andrew Swarbrick’s 50th goal of the season swept Ruabon to victory in front of 243 at the Recreation Ground.
Rovers are now five points behind leaders Caerwys with two games in hand.

Kobie Betts gave Spartans a 49th minute lead, but a 73rd minute equaliser from Daniel Woosey earned Casty a point.

Alister Randles and Ben Hughes notched two goals apiece for winners Penyffordd, Nathan Griffith also on target, Iwan Rogers with two replies for Villa.

Master marksman Kallum Pierce bagged a hat-trick in an emphatic win for Rangers.
