NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORTS – MARCH 26 Mike Beech Memorial Trophy semi-finals

New Brighton Villa 1 FC Queen’s Park 2 (AET)
Mike Latham struck an extra-time winner as the Park advanced to the Mike Beech final where the challenge of Greenfield awaits.

Dave Evans’ Wrexham side made their usual good start, Latham concerning the NBV keeper with a delightful chip just floating over.

The Park kept up the incessant pressure for about 25 minutes. Some great diagonal balls forward were causing the hosts all sorts of trouble, but NBV were always in the game.

The best chance of the half fell to Park’s Dylan Jones, who found himself in space inside the six-yard box to glance a free header wide.

Villa came roaring back and had a couple of close calls. Half time it remained 0-0..

The second half followed a similar pattern, but on 76 minutes a great strike from distance by Iwan Rogers put New Brighton 1-0 up.

With the Park needing a quick reply they found their shot in the arm when the reserve team came over the hill to throw their support at the lads after being victorious in their own semi-final.

This was just the boost the first team needed and on 83 minutes Rhys Hughes scored his first goal of the season to send the crowd wild.

The game was destined for extra time and it was during the first half that Latham worked his way into space and dispatched a thunderbolt past the diving NBV keeper.

With the goal secured QP shut the game down and with a tight rearguard display booked their final berth.
Greenfield 2 Connah’s Quay Town 1
