What an achievement! Wrexham club Queen’s Park rejoice over five-timer

Report by Dave Jones of Grassroots North Wales

All hail the treble kings of FC Queen’s Park from Wrexham!

Perhaps the city has celebrated more high-profile successes this season through the Hollywood-fuelled Red Dragons winning promotion back to the Football League, but community-based grassroots triumphs like the Park’s are every bit as important to many.

Manager Dave Evans had already led QP’s first team to the North East Wales League Premier Division title and the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy, but on Friday came a third trophy in the shape of the Horace Wynne Cup.

The Park beat a high quality Ruabon Rovers outfit on the verge of winning the tier five Championship Division crown 4-0 at the Memorial Playing Fields, Ruthin.

The first half was hard-fought with no goals scored, setting up a very interesting second period.

It was the tier 4 side who made the breakthrough on 53 minutes when Jack Hanley scored following a Richard Jones assist.

The Park’s Mike Latham has been in stupendous form since rejoining the club in the January transfer window and it was he who made it 2-0 in the 66th minute, Hanley concocting the assist on this occasion.

In the 87th minute the reds made sure of retaining the cup when Latham notched his 31st goal in 18 appearances.

Substitute Sean Humphreys added a fourth for good measure in the closing stages.

Queen’s Park have won no less than FIVE senior trophies as a club this season.

The firsts scooped the treble of North East Wales Premier Division title, Horace Wynne Cup and Mike Beech Memorial Trophy, while Malcolm Wareham’s seconds won the Reserve Division title and cup double.

It was so nearly a six-timer, but the Vets were beaten 3-2 by Hawarden Rangers in a cracking NEWFA Vets Cup Final on Sunday at Ruthin.

The Park got off to a great start with Alan Huxley heading home a Dave Evans corner.

This then brought a number of chances to the Wrexham side that they failed to pull away.

Hawarden came roaring back to lead 3-1 before a Dave Evans free kick set up a nail biting finish.

Mike Beech Memorial Trophy: Greenfield 1 FC Queen’s Park 3

Horace Wynne Cup: FC Queen’s Park 4 Ruabon Rovers 0

The Reserve Cup: FC Queen’s Park 2 Greenfield 0

NEWFA Vets Cup: Hawarden Rangers 3 FC Queen’s Park 2
